Uwe Seeler, champion of Hamburg and of the German national team, has died

(ANSA) – BERLIN, JULY 21 – Uwe Seeler, former German footballer, captain of West Germany and one of the honorary captains of the German national team, has died at the age of 85. This is confirmed by the historic club in his hometown, Hamburg, in which the striker played for almost twenty years, from 1953 to 1972, scoring over 400 goals. To stay in Hamburg, Seeler gave up an offer from Inter in 1961 and from 1995 to 1998 he also became president of the club. Seeler was much loved in his homeland, so much so that he was nicknamed “our Uwe”.

He had been elected West German Footballer of the Year three times, in 1960, 1964 and 1970. In 1970 he was also awarded the West German Federal Cross of Merit.

Seeler led Hamburg to win a German football championship in 1960 and a German Cup title in 1963. With the German national team he reached second place at the 1966 English World Cup and third at Mexico ’70, scoring in all over 40 networks. (HANDLE).
