Tennis: Sinner beats Alcaraz and wins the Croatia Open

Double Italian success at the Croatia Open, ATP 250 tournament, on the red clay courts of Umag. After the victory of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini in the doubles, in the evening Jannik Sinner won the singles title by beating in the final in three sets the favorite n.1 and defending champion Carlos Alcaraz with a score of 6-7, 6-1, 6 -1. The South Tyrolean, in the eighth final in an ATP tournament, won the seventh victory, while for the Spaniard, from tomorrow the number 4 in the world, it was the sixth in 2022, with three victories: Miami, Barcelona and Madrid. .
A sought after and deserved success that of Sinner, who made his return to competitions in Umag after the ankle injury suffered at Wimbledon in the match against Novak Djokovic. A return crowned by the first title of the season and above all by the success on what will probably be an opponent for many years to come. After a first set fought up to the tie break and won by the Spaniard by only two points, in the following two the South Tyrolean has spread, leaving only two games in as many sets to his rival, who has also returned from an infinite semifinal with the Roman Zeppieri.
Sinner’s triumph thus completes the blue day on the Croatian coast, opened by Bolelli and Fognini in the same tournament where 11 years ago they won their first couple title. Today they defeated in the final 5-7, 7-6, 10-7 the British-Finnish duo formed by Lloyd Glasspool and Harri Heliovaara, number 34 and 25 in the doubles ranking. “It was probably our craziest match ever – Bolelli said -, when we were down 0-6 they missed a few balls but we stayed focused, we played well.
I am happy with this victory and the second title in Umag with Fabio “.
Fognini also underlined how incredible the final was. “We saved six match points in a row in the tiebreak, that’s sport. Thanks Simone for letting me enjoy another title together here in Umag after eleven years.” With this success, they will rise to eighth place in the Pepperstone ATP Doubles Team Rankings, the ranking based on the best seasonal results of the doubles pairs that will determine the eight qualified at the Nitto ATP Finals in Turin. They will in fact overtake Tim Puetz and Michael Venus, defeated in Kitzbuhel by Fognini and Pedro Martinez. Today Bolelli and Fognini would therefore be virtually the last qualified in Turin.
