Bernal returns to the races, he will do the Tour of Denmark

(ANSA) – ROME, AUGUST 15 – Egan Bernal, winner of the Tour de France 2019 and the Giro d’Italia 2021, will return to racing on Tuesday, on the occasion of the cycling Tour of Denmark, almost seven months after the serious accident suffered in training . This was announced by ‘his of him’ team, the Ineos. “After a final evaluation over the weekend, the Ineos Grenadiers medical team has authorized the Colombian to resume competitions,” read a press release from the British team.

The 25-year-old Colombian climber crashed head-on into a bus while training in his country on January 24th. Operated several times for a series of fractures (femur, patella, vertebrae), he said he had “had a 95% chance of becoming paraplegic and almost lost his life”.

“After what happened to me in January, this is the moment I’ve been waiting for: to go back to racing with my teammates”, comments the Andean rider. “I can’t stress enough how tough the past eight months have been for me, both physically and mentally. That day and what happened after will be a part of me forever. I’ll never forget that,” Bernal said.

The Colombian hadn’t raced for almost a year, that is, since the Vuelta 2021, which closed in sixth place.

The challenge that awaits Bernal is very tough: Chris Froome, after the accident, has never returned to the levels of before, when he won four Tours, almost a fifth. The Englishman was also the victim of a violent fall with similar consequences (fractures of a femur, an elbow, a hip, a vertebra), during the reconnaissance of a time trial at the Dauphiné 2019. Froome, however, at the moment of the accident, he was 10 years older than the Colombian. (HANDLE).
