Basketball: World Cup; Italy wins but Gallinari loses

(ANSA) – BRESCIA, AUGUST 27 – Two out of two. After Ukraine, Italy also beats Georgia (91-84) and takes another important step towards qualifying for the 2023 World Cup. A success that not only keeps the Azzurri in the lead of group L by increasing the distance from a direct competitor in view of the November and February windows, but which allows the men of coach Gianmarco Pozzecco to arrive at the EuroBasket with a very high morale, which is now upon us.

The bitter note is represented by the left knee injury reported by Danilo Gallinari at the opening of the last quarter. His condition will be evaluated in the next few hours by the blue medical staff, in fact to know the extent of the injury it is necessary to wait for an MRI.

But. Pozzecco is worried: “We are not so optimistic as to think we have him at the European Championship”. For the new Boston Celtics player it is the same left knee that was knocked out in 2013.

Gallinari’s injury, one of the best in the field up to that moment, shook the other players but at least Italbasket proved to be capable of fighting to the end and not being influenced by negative events.

Best scorer was Simone Fontecchio with 21 points, also Gallinari (17), Spissu (15) and Melli (12) in double figures.

“It is not easy to talk about the game because we are still shaken by Danilo’s injury – captain Gigi Datome commented at the end of the game -, we hope that everything will be resolved for the best. In any case, today was a very convincing test for us. and challenging, we took him home with a good show of character, always reacting in difficult moments. In defense there was some drop in concentration but in general I think it was a challenge that prepared us best in view of these Europeans in which we would like to do well “.

Now the national team will have two days of rest from tomorrow, to then meet in Milan on 30 August and definitively conclude the preparation for the European Championship. The debut is scheduled for 2 September against Estonia at 21.00 at the Forum. To follow, the matches in Greece (September 3), Ukraine (September 5), Croatia (September 6) and Great Britain (September 8).
