Paris 2024 unveils “les Phryges”, the mascots for the Olympic Games

A Phrygian cap, an allegory of freedom and the Republic, is the symbol chosen as the mascot by the teams for the next Olympic Games. The mascot was unveiled on Monday. It is a tribe of little Phrygian caps, which have been called the Phryges. At the microphone of Europe 1, Julie Matikhine, Paris 2024 brand manager, explains the meaning of the new mascot: “It’s a tribe of little Phrygian caps, which we called the Phryges. The brand manager continues: “Our mascots are an ideal if not an animal. And this ideal is that of freedom and the Republic”.

A republican symbolism

These mascots look like Phrygian caps. Red in color, with blue eyes, a small mouth, arms, the logo of the Games on their stomachs, they also wear a Republican cockade and sneakers. The Paralympic mascot with a blade replacing a leg. Some will say that these mascots look more like big hens, others like the character of Patrick in SpongeBob SquarePants.

Mascots on sale from Tuesday

From Tuesday, products derived from these “Phryges” will be on sale, with a best-seller already announced: the Phrygian cap plush. They will initially be sold exclusively at Carrefour, in a large network of toy stores (Jouet Club, La Grande Récré, etc.), souvenir and travel products (Airports, service stations, etc.), in the Paris 2024 at the Halles in Paris which is inaugurated this Monday, as well as on the Paris 2024 online site.
