The five-time Ballon d’Or has not yet put on his cleats for his fifth World Cup, which he is already talking about a lot. Since Tuesday evening, Cristiano Ronaldo has been a free man after breaking his contract with Manchester United. The player finds himself once again in the spotlight: the Portuguese is the only player in the World Cup to no longer have a club.

The World Cup starts this Thursday for Portugal. One of the favorites of the competition makes his debut against Ghana with in his ranks, Cristiano Ronaldo, the only player in the World Cup to no longer have a club. Indeed, on Tuesday evening Manchester United announced that it had agreed with the striker to break his contract. A divorce that had been expected since the player’s explosive interview in which he criticized his club. Substitute since the start of the season, the World Cup is the perfect escape for a player now free but still in the spotlight.

A subject not discussed internally

It’s hard to avoid questions about Cristiano Ronaldo’s divorce from Manchester United at a press conference. Even if, however burning it is, the subject has not yet been discussed internally, including with his now ex-teammate at Manchester United, Bruno Fernandes. “No, he didn’t tell me about his decision. We are more focused on the World Cup,” he said.

But this is not necessarily the case for journalists who insisted on making coach Fernando Santos uncomfortable: “We feel embarrassed by questions about Cristiano Ronaldo,” said a journalist. “No, no I’m not embarrassed… I was just laughing,” he replied.

“It’s not a theme or a subject”

A laugh, no doubt a little yellow, since he immediately put an end to the debate. “It’s a topic that hasn’t even been talked about, not a single comment in training, during the trip, at the hotel… It’s not a theme or a topic even for him. Now when they’re in their room, I don’t know who they’re calling… The important thing is that the players are all in a fantastic state of mind,” he continued. And it will be necessary to be fantastic because after the missteps of the Argentinian and German favourites, there is no question of having their heads elsewhere for Cristiano Ronaldo and his gang in this Thursday’s match against Ghana.
