“I enjoy it”: National coach Flick rules out resignation after World Cup embarrassment

National coach Hansi Flick wants to remain in office despite failing in the preliminary round of the World Cup. “From my side yes, I enjoy it. We have a good team, good players coming up. So it’s not up to me,” said the coach on Thursday on ARD.

The German national team had previously failed at the World Cup in Qatar despite beating Costa Rica 4-2 (1-0) in the group stage.

Flick still wants to lead the team to the home European Championship in 2024. The task of working with the team appeals to him, he asserted.

But the 57-year-old also admitted: “My disappointment is huge, we have to deal with that first.” His team had enough chances for greater success against Costa Rica. “It wasn’t decided today, it was 20 minutes against Japan,” said Flick, looking at the 1-2 at the start of the World Cup.

“We weren’t efficient in this tournament,” confessed Flick. During the press conference, Flick said he wanted to work through the World Cup debacle “very, very quickly”. “I’m always someone who is very critical, and that will also be included in the analysis.” The national coach reported from the dressing room that the disappointment was “huge” there too.
