NFL legend Tom Brady: Patriot for a day

It is a tempting offer that the New England Patriots made to their probably greatest club legend: Tom Brady, NFL player and recently retired from football again, is to sign another contract for a day in Foxborough to be a Patriot to be able to step down. Brady had played for New England for 20 years, won six championships and shaped an unparalleled era of success with the team.

The fact that he last played three years in Tampa Bay is irrelevant to Patriots owner Robert Kraft. “He was always a patriot for us and always will be,” he said, and with this attitude he knows that the majority of the fans are behind him.

Brady wouldn’t be the first NFL star to re-sign a one-day contract with his longtime team either. Wide receiver Jerry Rice once did, and running back Emmitt Smith couldn’t resist the last deal of his career.

And now Brady? In his more than two decades on the field, he often worked as a cool strategy, dissecting the opposing defense almost like a machine in order to finally find the free teammate. His latest contract, which is supposed to give him 375 million dollars for ten years as an expert at the US broadcaster FOX, also suits the cool, weighing businessman.

His video message for this time probably final farewell as an NFL professional showed that he can still be emotional. And so it would be unsurprising, and ultimately fitting, if he were to don the #12 Patriots jersey one last time, if only for a day. It would be exactly the farewell that everyone in and around Boston would have always wanted and that they may still get.
