1. FC Union Berlin has at least temporarily taken the top spot in the Bundesliga with a 2-1 (1-0) win over FSV Mainz 05. Kevin Behrens before the break and Jordan, who later came on for him, scored for the Köpenicker. Former Union Marcus Ingvartsen made it 1-1 for Mainz with a penalty.
Union is two points ahead of FC Bayern, who visit Wolfsburg on Sunday. Third is Borussia Dortmund, who won 5-1 (1-1) against SC Freiburg. BVB benefited from an early sending off for guest player Kiliann Sildillia, who was shown a yellow card in the 16th minute. The cheers were particularly great when Sebastien Haller headed in after a corner to make it 3-1. For the attacker it was the first goal after his testicular cancer therapy and the first for BVB in a competitive game.
Hertha BSC lost 0:3 (0:2) at Eintracht Frankfurt and showed a very poor performance in the first half. The French vice world champion Kolo Muani first scored from the penalty spot (21st minute) and seven minutes later to make it 2-0. After the break, the Berliners got better, but the Frankfurt victory was no longer in real danger. In added time, Aurelio Buta scored to make it 3-0 for Eintracht.
Hertha remains penultimate, but is now five points behind a non-relegation zone, as VfL Bochum beat TSG Hoffenheim 5-2 (3-0) at the same time and thus celebrated their fourth home win in a row. At Hoffenheim, coach André Breitenreiter should be hard to keep after the ninth game without a win in a row.
There were no goals between 1. FC Köln and RB Leipzig, so both teams remain unbeaten this year. The Cologne team played 0-0 for the second time in a row. Saturday night’s game between Borussia Mönchengladbach and FC Schalke 04 also ended without a goal. One point doesn’t really help either team.
FC Augsburg had already won 1-0 (0-0) against Bayer Leverkusen on Friday evening and thus gained some air in the table basement (tsp).
