“We cannot incriminate my players”, protests Christophe Galtier after the defeat of PSG against Rennes

PSG could experience a very difficult end to the season. Christophe Galtier’s men lost at home to Rennes, a poor performance they had not experienced since 2018. In a post-match press conference, however, the coach defended his players, highlighting before the many current injuries.

“Yes, my players have given everything”, assures Paris Saint-Germain coach Christophe Galtier after a home defeat against Rennes (2-0) on Sunday which does not make it “not” so far “worried” for his future on the bench of the Parisian club. The Parisians seem to be struggling to recover from the Champions League elimination against Bayern Munich. The end of the season is likely to be long for Christophe Galtier’s men.

Journalist : Does this defeat and this bad game of your team upset you?

Christophe Galtier : “A defeat upsets all the time. Afterwards, there is what you see, and what we see, from the bench. We conceded situations, we are sanctioned in the 45th minute on a ball in depth , then we take second goal on a loss of dangerous ball inside the game. We find ourselves trailing 2-0, it’s difficult. But if we go back to the scenario, we still have favorable situations, Steve Mandanda has made saves, in the second half too. I’m not going to be satisfied with that game, but in the context, and with the number of absences, even if it’s not an excuse, we knew we were going to have flutters.”

Journalist : The supporters supported you until the end, what can we tell them when we see the lack of investment of certain players?

Christophe Galtier : “Our supporters were present until the end, but I find it difficult to join you: yes, my players gave everything, everything they had in their legs. You have the feeling that the players don’t have not given their all, but put yourself in the shoes of the players who see eight absentees and the youngsters from the academy who they have seen twice in training. You cannot incriminate my players for the fact that they weren’t invested, that’s not true. When you find yourself trailing 2-0 against Rennes and with not many solutions on the bench, you can understand a little resignation.”

Journalist : Does this defeat cast a shadow over your future at the club?

Christophe Galtier : “I’m not worried about myself. I came to this two-year project, everyone speculates on what will happen at the end of the season, I repeat that my obsession is to be champion. I am not not projected on my future but on the ten matches that remain, I am in the action, not passive, determined that we end up champions. Will this defeat generate a reflection from my management? But we have to put things in context, we were missing eight players. Does this match have to call everything into question? This is the 7th defeat since the World Cup, there is no excuses to be had but there are reasons, we have to analyze things precisely. The organizations are very tired and the players are going to be selected. We are still ahead in the championship, we are going to fight to be champions of France, I hope that we will have a more competitive squad against Lyon in two weeks.”
