The European Football Union has responded to the call of the European Parliament deputies to remove teams from Belarus from all tournaments under the auspices of UEFA. On March 13, more than 100 parliamentarians sent a letter to UEFA, in which they expressed outrage at the participation of Belarus in the qualification for the European Football Championship 2024.
UEFA intends to discuss the situation with Belarus at the upcoming meeting of the Executive Committee on April 4 in Lisbon, the German edition of Sportschau quotes the response of the head of the Union Aleksander Čeferin.
Last fall, UEFA officially suspended the Russian national team from qualifying for Euro 2024. At the same time, reports of a similar decision regarding the Belarusian national team were not confirmed. Politicians in Brussels and Berlin are now calling on UEFA to also exclude Belarus due to its war of aggression against Ukraine.
“UEFA is closely following the worrying developments you mentioned in your letter. The decisions to be made in this regard are the sole responsibility of the UEFA Executive Committee,” Sportschau said in a response.
The UEFA Executive Committee consists of one woman and 19 members. One of them is still Alexander Dyukov, president of the Russian Football Union.
The manager of Gazprom can continue to fulfill his duties, because FIFA and UEFA have eliminated only teams from Russia, but have not excluded football associations from the Russian Federation and Belarus. They are still members of UEFA and FIFA.
