2-1 defeat by Uruguay: South Korea also without a win in Klinsmann’s second game

The South Korean national soccer team also went without a win in the second game under their new head coach Jürgen Klinsmann. Four days after beating Colombia 2-2, the South Koreans lost 2-1 (0-1) to Uruguay on Tuesday in Seoul. The goals for the two-time world champion came from Sebastián Coates in the 10th minute and Matías Vecino in the 63rd minute. In front of almost 64,000 spectators in the World Cup stadium, In-Beom Hwang equalized in the 51st minute for the 2002 World Cup fourth-placed player.

Similar to the game against Colombia, the former national coach expressed his satisfaction with the performance of his team. Although he was not happy with the result, he was happy with how the team performed, Klinsmann said, according to the South Korean news agency Yonhap. “We had problems in the first 20 minutes. We couldn’t find our rhythm straight away.”

But over 70 minutes South Korea was the much better team. It was important to him that his players learned to keep up the pace against strong opponents. “That’s the pace you need to adapt to the highest level.”

At the World Cup in Qatar at the end of last year, South Korea, then coached by Portuguese Paulo Bento, and Uruguay drew 0-0 in the group stage of the tournament.

The South Korean Football Association announced Klinsmann’s commitment at the end of February. The 1990 world champion has a contract until the World Cup final in 2026. Klinsmann, 58, has set himself a short-term goal of winning the Asian Cup with South Korea in Qatar early next year. The Taegueuk Warriors last lifted the trophy in 1960 – that was the second time in a row. (dpa)
