Leipzig loses 0: 3: Clever Mainzers plunge RB into the crisis

RB Leipzig suffered a bitter setback in the fight for a place in the Champions League against FSV Mainz 05. Coach Marco Rose’s team lost 3-0 (1-0) to FSV Mainz 05 on Saturday and missed out on the top four in the Bundesliga. Mainz celebrated their first win ever in the Leipzig Arena and have been unbeaten in seven games.

Marcus Ingvartsen (9th minute) gave the visitors the lead in front of 45,597 spectators before Ludovic Ajorque (57th) and Dominik Kohr (67th) increased. For RB it was the third defeat in a row after the 0:7 at Manchester City and the 0:1 at VfL Bochum. Now the Saxons, who have lost four of the last seven league games, have to fear for the Champions League qualification as fifth in the table. They are two points behind fourth-placed Freiburg.

The FSV immediately took the first chance to lead through Ingvartsen. Although RB goalkeeper Janis Blaswich parried brilliantly against Leandro Martins Barreiro, the Dane was spot on and only had to push in the ball that bounced off to the side.

RB supporters were visibly upset

Standing almost motionless with her arms crossed, Rose sent five pros to warm up early on. The fans acknowledged the harmless cross attachment with whistles. Rose responded at the restart, bringing David space for Marcel Halstenberg on the left and Amadou Haidara for Kevin Kampl in defensive midfield. When Rose, with Dani Olmo (56th), just substituted the hope for the offensive, RB was caught cold again: Barreiro crossed from the half field into the penalty area, where Ajorque (57th) with his back to the goal, put the ball over Blaswich into the long Eck lifted.

“We want to see you fight,” demanded the RB supporters. But only Mainz could convince. After Kohr (67′) increased the lead to 3-0 with a shot from 18 meters into the right corner, the Mainz fans who had traveled with them danced in the stands. (dpa)
