Japan’s weather agency warns – Typhoon is heading for Olympic city

It could be uncomfortable for the Olympians in Japan at the beginning of the week. Typhoon “Nepartak” moved on Sunday over the Pacific with wind speeds close to its center of a good 100 kilometers per hour towards the Japanese main island of Honshu. As the national weather authority announced, the cyclone – the eighth of the season – is likely to approach the east and northeast of the island kingdom around Tuesday and threatens to hit land in the area around the Olympic city of Tokyo. The authority warned of heavy rains, stormy winds and high waves.

The organizing committee of the games is preparing for the typhoon according to its own statements. The rowing races originally planned for Monday have already been postponed. It is not uncommon for changes in the schedule to occur due to weather conditions, which has also happened at previous Olympic Games, said a spokesman. The advantage of typhoons is that, unlike earthquakes, the course of a cyclone can be assessed

The foothills of the typhoon could cover the Kanto-Koshin region, where Tokyo is also located, at the beginning of the week with heavy rain and wind speeds of up to 126 kilometers per hour. This could also lead to obstructions to traffic. (dpa)
