The best tennis player of Belarus, Arina Sobolenko, refused to give a press conference at the French Open after defeating Russian Kamilla Rakhimova (6:2, 6:2) in the third round, Sky News reports. The reason for this decision of the athlete was the questions of journalists about the war in Ukraine at the previous press conference in the second round of Roland Garros.
The world No. 2 said she had made a decision “for her own mental health and wellbeing”, specifying that she “didn’t feel safe” during an interview on Wednesday after winning the second round.
She was asked about Moscow’s full-scale invasion and her country’s role as a springboard for the Russian military’s initial offensive.
“For the sake of my own mental health and well-being, today I decided to get out of this situation and the tournament supported me in this decision,” Sobolenko commented on her refusal to the organizers of the Franch Open.
Earlier, she spoke cynically about the relationship with Ukrainian tennis players and the war in our country.
As GLOBAL HAPPENINGS reported, Ukrainian tennis player Marta Kostyuk was booed after the match with Arina Sobolenko at Roland Garros after refusing to press the hand of the Belarusian.
