The famous Ukrainian tennis player Elina Svitolina failed to reach the semi-finals of the French Open Roland Garros-2023. Our compatriot lost to the representative of Belarus Arina Sobolenko, and after the fight she ran into the whistle of the fans because of her refusal to press her opponent’s hand.
The meeting lasted 96 minutes and ended with the score 6:4, 6:4. Elina chose the tactics of the game from defense and made her opponent make a lot of mistakes. During the match, Sobolenko made 37 unforced errors. However, the Belarusian was more aggressive, which allowed her to celebrate the victory.
Sobolenko has 30 actively won draws in this match against Elina’s seven. After losing the first game, the Ukrainian took a 2-0 lead at the beginning of the second, but then lost four games in a row. The second racket of the world from Belarus thus broke the course of the set and brought it to the final success.
Immediately after the match, Sobolenko provoked the stands to attack Svetolina. She approached the net and defiantly waited for congratulations from our tennis player, although she had previously stated that she would not shake hands with rivals from Russia and Belarus.
As a result, the audience reacted with a whistle to the fact that the Ukrainian passed by the opponent and thanked the referee for the duel. On the social network Twitter, some of the fans accused Svetolina of hatred, and some ridiculed Sobolenko. She was reminded of the act of the Russian woman Daria Kasatkina, who, after losing to Elina, showed her an unexpected gesture.
As GLOBAL HAPPENINGS reported, Roland Garros-2023 employees cut the Ukrainian flag in half for one of the fans on the eve of the Svitolina-Sobolenko match.
