The Executive Board of the International Olympic Committee (IOC) has recommended that the IOC withdraw recognition from the International Boxing Association (IBA), reports Inside the Games. According to media reports, the final decision will be made at an extraordinary session of the IOC, which will be held online on June 22.
The IOC Executive Board has concluded that the IBA has not met the conditions set before it to reverse the derecognition of the IBA.
In response, the IBA described the recommendation of the IOC Executive Board as “truly disgusting and purely political.” The Russian President of the IBA, Umar Kremlev, said that it “does not reflect the reality of a situation where exceptional progress has been made in reforms and internationally recognized standards of good governance.”
The IOC believes that boxing should retain its place on the 2024 Olympic program. Boxing has been excluded from the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles. If this sport is returned to the Olympics, the IOC will not allow the IBA to organize the Olympic tournament in Los Angeles in 2028.
In its report, the IOC stated that it had no choice but to suspend recognition of the IBA due to the severity of the situation.
“Despite the various chances provided by the IBA, including a roadmap from 2021 to 2023, to address various issues with a real and effective evolution, the IBA was unable to provide the elements that would allow its suspension to be lifted,” the report said.
As reported by GLOBAL HAPPENINGS, the IBA refused to comply with the requirements of the Court of Arbitration for Sport in Lausanne (CAS), which banned the election of the president of the association. As a result, an ardent fan of dictator Vladimir Putin, Kremlev was re-elected to his post, after which he lifted the suspension of Russians from boxing tournaments and imposed sanctions on Ukraine.
After that, the United States Boxing Federation (USA Boxing) announced its withdrawal from the International Boxing Association (IBA).
