Davis Cup; Sinner beats Cilic, Italy hopes for the double

Maneuver, Salvini:

Jannik Sinner makes 1-1 and gives Italy new hope. The South Tyrolean beats Marin Cilic and thus redeems Sonego’s defeat in the first race. After two hours and 42 of play, the blue managed to get the better of his opponent: 3-6, 7-6, 6-3. In a few minutes there will be double, with Volandri’s team called to the prohibitive exam against Mektic and Pavic. Whoever wins, goes directly to the semifinals in Madrid; whoever loses, must hope to be among the best to be “fished out”.

Lorenzo Sonego loses the first match of Italy-Croatia, valid comparison for the quarter-finals of the Davis Cup. The Turin player gives in surprise against Borna Gojo, n.279 in the world. Ahead of 4-1 in the first set, the Turin-born loses 6-7 in the tie-break. Sonego redeems himself in the second set, winning 6-2, but then collapses in the last: 2-6 for the Croatian, Italy is down after the first single. Now it will be up to Sinner to try the comeback against Cilic, followed by the double Fognini-Sinner against Mektic-Pavic.
