Covid: Isu Grand Prix final canceled in Japan

(ANSA) – TOKYO, 02 DEC – The final of the Isu Grand Prix of figure skating, scheduled in Osaka, Japan from 9 to 12 December, was canceled after the decision of the Japanese authorities to close the country’s borders for fears the spread of the new variant of the Covid-19 Omicron. The organizers announced it today. “We offer our sincere apologies to everyone involved who we cause inconvenience, but we hope for your understanding,” the Japan Skating Federation said in a statement.

The Japanese government on Wednesday asked airlines to suspend all new bookings in its territory for a month amid concerns over the Omicron variant, before partially loosening the rule Thursday to ensure its citizens can return to their country. The Japanese Yuma Kagiyama, who qualified for this final after winning the Italian and French Grand Prix, reacted to this cancellation announcement by posting a message on his Twitter account accompanied by an emoticon representing a tear.
