The Mercedes team has officially contested the result of the Abu Dhabi race, which saw the victory of Max Verstappen over Lewis Hamilton and the conquest of the world title by the Dutch Red Bull. The appeal, in particular, concerns what happened during the safety car regime after which Verstappen, on the last lap, overtook the British. According to the official documents communicated by the International Automobile Federation (FIA), guarantor of the regulation in F1, the protagonists had to be heard by the stewards from 7:45 pm local time. Mercedes confirmed the appeal but will not comment until the hearing is over. The safety car entered the track after an accident to Nicholas Latifi (Williams) on lap 53. At first, the race director Michael Masi did not allow the late drivers – including Verstappen who had changed tires – to return to their original positions, then changed his mind, with the Dutchman who was able to return behind Hamilton, who then overtook at the resumption of the race. According to Mercedes, however, not all cars would return to their original position at the time of the restart, so this would not have been regular.
