(ANSA) – ROME, JANUARY 18 – The world of football is mourning the death of Francisco ‘Paco’ Gento, legend of the great Real Madrid. It was the ‘blanco’ club itself, as Marca reports, to announce the death of the former champion, who was 88 years old. Gento was one of the greatest figures in Spanish football and beyond. He is still the only player to have won the European Cup six times in his career. Together with Paolo Maldini he is one of the two players who played 8 finals of the highest European competition (the AC Milan player stopped at 5 wins).

He played with the Real Madrid shirt between 1953 and 1971: in 18 competitive seasons he won 24 titles and scored 182 goals. He wore the Spanish national team shirt on 43 occasions. He occupies, together with the French scorer Just Fontaine, the 30th place in the special ranking of the best players of the twentieth century drawn up by IFFHS. The nephews Paco and Julio Llorente were also successful footballers, without however achieving the fame of their uncle. (HANDLE).
