Ronaldo will leave if United does not qualify for the Champions League

Work, Pierpaolo Bombardieri:

There is already an air of divorce between Cristiano Ronaldo and Manchester United: after last week’s outburst, when the Portuguese complained about the team’s results, his representatives met with the club’s top management to discuss the possible termination of the contract at the end of the season if the Red Devils do not qualify for the next Champions League.

United are currently in seventh place in the Premier League, 5 points behind fourth place, but with two games to catch up, while there are even 24 points behind leaders Manchester City. Another supporting championship for England’s most successful club despite the return of Ronaldo, 37, last summer. Who – at least in the media – does not yet seem to regret the choice made, while not hiding the frustration for the mediocre results obtained so far in the championship. During an interview carried out last week CR7 had declared that he had not returned to Old Trafford “to reach seventh place in the standings”, also raising some doubts about the hiring of Ralf Rangnick, the interim coach chosen by the owners to replace the exonerated Ole Gunnar Solskjaer.

Dissatisfied on the pitch, uncertain about the direction taken by the Manchester club, this week Ronaldo – writes the Sun today – has therefore requested a meeting between his representatives and Richard Arnold, who will hold the role of general manager of United from 1 February. The main topic of the meeting, the future of Ronaldo whose contract with Manchester United expires in the summer of 2023, but who seems willing to play at least up to 40 years: the parties have agreed to let the Portuguese leave in the summer, if United did not close the championship in the top four of the table.
