(ANSA) – BOGOTA, 25 JAN – Egan Bernal is hospitalized in an intensive care unit after the operation following the training accident in Colombia, which caused him several fractures and chest trauma. The “neurosurgical intervention” on the 25-year-old cyclist was “successful” and “a gradual evolution is expected in the next 72 hours in intensive care” reads the bulletin released by the university clinic of Sabana. According to the hospital, the spinal surgery was performed “maintaining neurological integrity and preserving the functionality of the affected segments”.
“We immediately started the rehabilitation process to obtain the best possible results for our patient” continues.
Bernal, 25, winner of the 2019 Tour de France and last year’s Giro d’Italia, yesterday hit the back of a stopped bus in the municipality of Gachancipá, almost thirty kilometers north of Bogotá, while training. In the photographs released by the local media, the cyclist can be seen lying down and surrounded by his teammates. Doctors also diagnosed him with “chest trauma” and fractures to the femur and patella.
A few days ago, in a video posted on his social networks, Bernal complained of the unconsciousness of a motorist who had risked to run over him. He had recently formalized the extension until the end of 2026 of the contract with the Ineos team. (HANDLE).
