NASA scientists have repeatedly stated that the first images from the James Webb telescope will differ from space images taken by other telescopes. Therefore, they were not even initially wanted to be shown to the public.
Scientists warned that the first images would be blurry and repetitive from the 18 segments of Webb’s main mirror. This is what the first photo of the James Webb telescope looks like:
These images were taken by the telescope’s main camera, called the near-infrared camera, and are part of the telescope’s fine-tuning process.
The first target star for James Webb was a sun-like star in the constellation Ursa Major HD 84406, about 260 light-years away.
Alignment of the James Webb mirror segments is expected to take up to three months. Once completed, Webb will be ready for his mission to look deeper into the universe than ever before.
