(ANSA) – ROME, FEBRUARY 15 – The first coordinated investigation of the European Committee for the protection of personal data (EDPB) is underway, the results at the end of 2022. Twenty-two national control authorities of the See (the European Economic Area), including the Italian privacy guarantor, will verify the use of cloud services by public entities. The digital transformation triggered by the Covid-19 pandemic has led many public entities, including in Italy, to resort to cloud services.

However, it is often complex for public administrations to obtain ICT products and services that are in line with EU data protection regulations. With this investigation, the supervisory authorities therefore intend to verify compliance with the GDPR, as well as promote best practices to ensure adequate protection of personal data.

The survey will cover a total of more than 80 subjects operating in various sectors (such as health, taxation, education), including European institutions, central purchasing bodies and ICT service providers of the central and local PA. The survey will be developed at a national level in various ways, including: the administration of a questionnaire; the launch of specific investigations or the continuation of those already in progress, including through inspections. The authorities will analyze, in particular, the procedures and guarantees adopted in the phases of acquisition and use of cloud services, problems related to international data transfers and the use of additional measures, as well as the regulation of relations between data controllers and processors. . The results of the investigations will be examined in a coordinated manner with the other European authorities to further investigate the issue and allow for targeted follow-up at EU level. In any case, the individual authorities will decide on any subsequent interventions, including corrective ones. (HANDLE).
