Pollution contributes to more deaths worldwide than the pandemic, according to a report released Tuesday by the UN.
The largest environmental contributor to premature death is air pollution, which annually claims about 7 million lives.
The vast majority of deaths occur in countries with low and middle income, accounting for more than 90% of these deaths.
Workers in factories and similar places are also at particular risk of: more than 750 thousand people die every year from exposure to substances such as exhaust fumes and asbestos.

Lead exposure is still associated with approximately 1 million deaths per year. The chemical industry is exacerbating the climate emergency.
It consumes over 10% of fossil fuels and emits approximately 3.3 billion tons of greenhouse gases annually.
