Researchers discover exceptionally rare, newly hatched ‘ghost shark’ off New Zealand’s South Island
Unique ghost shark accidentally found in the ocean
Translucent, jelly-like and crowned with a pair of giant black eyes on a pointed head, the cub looks like an alien.
: Five eyes and a trunk: scientists have found the remains of a creature from a fantasy novel
He probably belongs to one of over 50 known ghost shark species, also known as chimeras, which live in deep waters around the world, writes Live Science.
According to the National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA)it’s not exactly sharks, but Chimeras are closely related to both sharks and rays.
In fact, they are fish with skeletons made of cartilage instead of bones. Ghost shark embryos develop in egg capsulesdeposited on the seabed.
There, the embryos feed on the yolk until the time comes to hatch. Given their small size and deep habitat, baby ghost sharks are extremely rare.
This pointed a blue chimera was found near the top of a seamount Davidson near the coast of Central California, at a depth of about 1640 meters.
Researchers will run genetic tests on the cub to try to figure out if what species of ghost shark it belongs to. Scientists can then compare it to an adult of the same species.
