(ANSA-AFP) – ROME, FEBRUARY 24 – Twitter acknowledged that it had mistakenly suspended some accounts that shared details and fact checking on Russian military activity. The profiles, the company explained, had been blocked due to “a coordinated campaign of bots”, ie automatic accounts, which aimed to discredit these profiles. The report came from Aric Toler, a researcher at Bellingcat, an investigative journalism and fact checking site. He drew attention to the incorrect suspension of the account after a user was banned. He also mistakenly suspended the open source intelligence account “OSINT”, as well as a French-language account that shared images and other data.
Bellingcat, in particular, has investigated many topics, from the assassination attempt against Alexei Navalny to the attack on Malaysia Airlines Flight 17.
In a tweet, Twitter integrity officer Yoel Roth explained that the platform’s human moderation team made the mistake in its efforts “to proactively detect and remove corrupted photos and videos.” “We took action on a number of accounts by mistake – added the spokesperson – We are rapidly reviewing these actions and have already restored access to a number of affected accounts.” The platform, along with other Silicon Valley companies, is regularly accused of not doing enough to combat disinformation.
