It was found just four miles south of the last position recorded in 1915 by ship’s captain Frank Worsley.

In early February, the Endurance 22 team went on a search aboard the South African icebreaker Agulhas II. Using a suite of autonomous submersibles, the team searched for unusual features on the seafloor and eventually stumbled upon the wreckage of the ship.

Images of the wreck show that it is in excellent condition and has been favored by various marine life. Ice water stopped the decay of wood, writes cnet.com.

One of the reasons it took so long to find the ship is that the Weddell Sea is covered in a thick layer of ice – the same ice that sank the Endurance. Even modern icebreakers find it difficult to get into this area.

However, this year Antarctica saw record low sea ice coverage, so the researchers decided on an unprecedented mission.

The Endurance got stuck in the ice in February 1915 and held out for several weeks until it was finally swallowed up by the ice. At this point, Shackleton and his team of 27 were huddled in makeshift camps right on the ice.

Earlier we wrote that the Doomsday ship is at risk of exploding off the coast of Britain. The British government finally decided to protect people from the explosion of a half-sunken ship in 1944 with 1,400 tons of TNT on board.
