With the DJI OM 5, your smartphone becomes an (almost) professional camera

Should we still present DJI? The world leader in civilian drones is also making a name for itself in other markets, in particular that of camera stabilizers. For the general public, DJI is also the Osmo Mobile family, its range of stabilizers for smartphones.

“For those who care about their smartphone, DJI OM 5 is the compact gimbal at the cutting edge of technology, ideal for immortalizing unforgettable moments” says Paul Pan, Product Line Manager at DJI. Indeed, on paper, this new stabilizer promises to take a new step.

Compact design and selfie stick

The new OM 5 is distinguished first of all by its compact design. It is a third smaller than its predecessor and “Fits in the palm of your hand when folded” announces the brand. It will therefore slip even more easily into a bag.

In order to provide more versatility, DJI has revised the magnetic flange. More solid, it can now accommodate more different smartphones and supports cases. A separately available flange also incorporates a lamp for filming in dark environments.

At last, the DJI OM 5 integrates an extension bar (selfie stick) telescopic to offer “New possibilities of dynamic angles”. An additional button on the handle makes it easier to control the functions of the three-axis stabilizer.

New creative functions

The functions, precisely, are once again very numerous. ActiveTrack (object tracking) is upgraded to version 4.0 and now supports 3x zoom at 5m / s. To make professional videos (yes it is possible with a smartphone), DJI adds a series of pre-recorded programs. It will of course be necessary to go through the companion application to access it easily.

DJI deploys gesture control (trigger the photo or video remotely with a simple gesture), DynamicZoom reproduces the dramatic effect of Dolly zoom made popular by Alfred Hitchcock. Also on the program, the traditional Timelapse, Motionlapse et Hyperlapse as well as the function Panoramas.

Vlogging enthusiasts will appreciate the glamorous effect correcting facial defects. Social media fans will undoubtedly abuse the mode Story offering several pre-defined editing models with effects, music and transitions for instant sharing. Finally, the function Spin Shot nacelle makes it possible to simulate an effect of rotation of the nacelle.

DJI OM 5 price and availability

The DJI OM 5 is available in two colors Sunset White and Athens Gray at the price of 159 euros. It comes with a magnetic clamp, tripod, power cable, wrist strap and storage pouch.

The smartphone clamp with integrated lamp is sold separately at a price of 49 euros. The Sunset White version is already available on the DJI website. The Gris d’Athènes model is also sold through partner distributors.
