Ukraine: government launches bitcoin fundraising site

Cingolani:

The Ukrainian government has launched a site in partnership with cryptocurrency platforms FTX and Everstake to collect donations in bitcoin and other virtual currencies to support Ukraine against the Russian invasion and funnel resources to the Ukrainian central bank. On the “Aid for Ukraine” website, users can make donations in 10 cryptocurrencies, including bitcoin, but also ether, tether or dogecoin. There is also the addition of non-fungible tokens (NFT), the certificates of authenticity of a digital object. “Cryptocurrencies play a significant role in Ukraine’s defense,” said Oleksandre Borniakov, Ukraine’s Deputy Minister for Digital Transformation. “Cryptocurrency assets have proved extremely valuable in facilitating the flow of funding to Ukrainian citizens and soldiers and in raising awareness and interest in the global public,” he adds.

Thanks to Everstake, one of the main players in the cryptocurrency sector in Ukraine, donors can make donations even in cryptocurrencies other than those listed on the site. The Bahamas-based exchange platform FTX, founded by American billionaire Sam Bankman-Fried, is committed to converting the funds into dollars and routing them to the Ukrainian National Bank. Since the start of the conflict, the site has had donations of over $ 49 million. The goal is to reach $ 200 million. The money, say the actors of the initiative, will be used to support both the military and civilians “who are in desperate need of humanitarian assistance”.
