(ANSA) – MILAN – Every day Google receives about 20 million contributions on Maps, the navigation app of the Mountain View giant. As a note from the group explains, throughout 2021, global service teams blocked more than 100 million incorrect edits, including photos, descriptions, and business hours. Thanks to the use of algorithms and AI, Google has managed to identify and remove more than 7 million fake company profiles, 630,000 of which reported directly by users. Over 12 million attempts to create bogus company accounts and nearly 8 million aimed at claiming commercial activities not belonging to the bad guys.

“Through improvements in machine learning technologies, we have deactivated more than 1 million user accounts due to activities that violate policies, such as online vandalism or fraud,” explained Pavithra Kanakarajan, Group Product Manager, User Generated Content for Google. According to the company’s data, after the various reopenings from the lockdowns, people have relied more on Google Maps to check the opening hours of shops, parks and other places of public interest, as well as to access information about the protocols of health safety activated.

This has led to “a flood of fake reviews and violent content” often for no specific reason. “Review bombing, for example, has become a popular way for people to try to harm local businesses, an extreme phenomenon where the public debate on security measures has been most animated.” In response, Google has blocked or removed more than 95 million reviews, 60,000 of which for Covid-related reasons.
