For more than five years, Nokia has been providing equipment and services to connect the System of Operative Investigative Measures (SORM) to Russia’s largest telecom operator, MTS, according to documents obtained by The New York Times.

SORM was reportedly used to spy on supporters of opposition leader Alexei Navalny and also intercepted a call from an “enemy of the Kremlin” who was later killed. The name is not called.

Most likely, at the moment, Putin is using this system to suppress anti-war voices inside Russia.

Although Nokia does not manufacture technology for intercepting messages, the company’s equipment was used by the FSB to listen to telephone conversations, intercept email and text messages, and monitor other Internet communications.

Documents covering the period from 2008 to 2017 indicate that Nokia knew it was launching a Russian surveillance system.

However, for them, this cooperation was beneficial in light of doing business in Russia, where the company has become a leading supplier of equipment and services to various clients in the telecommunications industry, earning hundreds of millions of dollars annually.
