Meta, with AI improves gender representation on Wikipedia

Poland:

Meta’s Artificial Intelligence at the service of cultural inclusion. Thanks to a scientific project, technology will soon contribute to the increase in the number of biographies of women and minorities on Wikipedia, among the 10 most visited websites in the world. At the moment only 20% of these are dedicated to women and the percentage decreases if they are women belonging to “intersectional groups”, for example scientists or African or Asian women.

Angela Fan, researcher of Meta – Artificial Intelligence – together with Claire Gardent, speaker of the Université de Lorraine, in France – has designed an “open and reproducible” scientific method that will contribute to increasing the cultural representation of women and minorities on the web. As a note from the parent company of Facebook, WhatsApp and Instagram explains, it created a template that “searches websites for relevant information about the characters and writes a Wikipedia-style draft, complete with quotes. A new set of data will also be available shortly. created to evaluate the performance of the model on 1,527 biographies of women belonging to marginalized groups. The voices generated by artificial intelligence could be a starting point for people who write content for Wikipedia and for fact-checkers, thus helping to increase the publication of biographies dedicated to underrepresented groups “.

The next step, explains Meta, is “to identify other people underrepresented in Wikipedia such as transgender or non-binary people, for whom there are forms of prejudice that also affect online sources of information. The Meta model represents an important step forward to support and complete other existing initiatives whose aim is to improve gender representation on Wikipedia. A long and ambitious work for Angela Fan, but also an important cultural milestone for Meta, in the name of inclusiveness “.
