(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 04 – The Chinese Huawei could be subject to new US sanctions for the expansion of cooperation with Russia, which is in difficulty after so many Western technology companies have fled the country. The newspaper says that if companies like Nokia and Ericsson completely cut ties with Moscow, the country will need China’s support. Huawei and ZTE could play a key role in replacing network infrastructures in the territory. In Crimea, Russia “ditched Western telecommunications equipment in heavily militarized territory and replaced it with Huawei and ZTE,” said Hosuk Lee-Makiyama, a telecommunications expert at the European Center for International Political Economy. According to the Financial Times, Huawei’s four Russian research centers are recruiting dozens of engineers, the company has also opened new stores and business development in Moscow since the beginning of the invasion of Ukraine. In addition, Huawei had already won a significant portion of the contracts to launch 4G and 5G networks in Russia, and together with ZTE it controls about 40-60% of the wireless network equipment market in Russia.
