(ANSA) – ROME, APRIL 06 – 53% of Italians between 16 and 74 use the internet to get information on health. In practice, one in two people, in line with the European average of 55%. To say this are the Eurostat data published today and referring to the year 2021.

On the internet you are looking for news relating to diseases or treatments, but also advice to improve your well-being in general, for example on nutrition. An increasingly widespread habit, considering that in 2011 the share of Europeans who used the web to find health information was 38%.

In Italy the leap forward was even 26 percentage points (it was 27% in 2011).

The increase, in the last decade, has occurred throughout Europe, although, according to Eurostat data, the jump was higher in Cyprus (+46 percentage points), Czechia (+33), Malta (+32) and Spain (+31).

However, the percentage of people seeking health information online for private purposes continues to be very different across Member States. The largest share, in 2021, was recorded in Finland (80%), followed by the Netherlands and Norway (both with 77%), Denmark (75%) and Cyprus (74%).

For the lowest shares we need to look at Bulgaria (36%), Romania (40%), Germany (45%) and Poland (47%).
