Ransomware ransomware has flown over the years, from $ 1,000 in 2013 to $ 5 million today. These are the data that emerge from the latest report by security company Yoroi, which recalls how these threats are now one of the main ones that companies must face. If today the amount required to remove the limitation that blocks the infected device starts from 100 thousand dollars, the main sectors affected are health, also following the systems created to manage and analyze the trends of infection and treatment of Covid-19, the public administration and government bodies, increasingly central to citizens’ lives.
According to Yoroi, at the head of the criminal groups for trafficking and ransom are Maze, which has attacked large companies and PA and Conti, Russian hackers who have sided in favor of Moscow in the Ukrainian conflict. In February 2022 following the military escalation, a Ukrainian researcher disclosed chats and sensitive information relating to the Conti group, from which the gains and the powerful organizational structure emerged. Yoroi’s report highlights that at least four levels of ransomware-related extortion were recorded in 2021.
They range from denying access to files and systems to the threat of public disclosure of the victim’s sensitive corporate data. In case of non-payment of the ransom, the operators also threaten Denial of Service (DDoS) attacks on the victim’s systems, preventing or slowing their recovery, thanks to the fact that they presumably have preserved the accesses within the victim’s infrastructures. Finally, attackers increasingly threaten to sell stolen data to other groups, so as to further extend the violations to the detriment of businesses and users.
