(ANSA) – STRASBOURG, 04 MAY – Green light from the European Parliament to the recommendations on artificial intelligence. In the text, adopted with 495 votes in favor, 34 against and 102 abstentions, MEPs stress that “the public debate on the use of artificial intelligence (AI) should focus on how to explore the enormous potential of technology to support human beings” and they ask that the EU, which has so far lagged behind in the global race for technological leadership, take steps to avoid the risk “that future technological standards will be developed elsewhere and by undemocratic actors”.

In recommendations, drafted by the special commission on AI (Aida), MEPs identify policy-based options to unlock the enhancement of AI in the areas of health, environment and climate change, to help fight pandemics and world hunger, and to improve people’s quality of life through personalized medicine.

MEPs take note of the Union’s push for a global agreement on common rules for the responsible use of AI and express concern about its use related to military research and technological developments for the creation of autonomous lethal weapon systems . The report calls for monitoring that “authoritarian regimes use AI systems to carry out mass surveillance and classify their citizens or restrict freedom of movement, while dominant technology platforms use AI technologies to obtain more personal information” .
