Twitter tests Circle, tweets only close contacts

While waiting to understand what will happen in its future, Twitter does not stop experimenting and making new functions available to a limited audience. The most recent is called Circle and aims to reduce the reach of posts to a list of friends. By selecting the public of interest from the drop-down in the box for writing a new message, with or without photos and videos, subscribers can decide whether to make the content readable to everyone or only to a circle of people, added to their “circle”. A similar function is present on Instagram under “Close friends”.

Currently users can only have one Circle and the maximum number of accounts to add is limited to 150.

The new option is not to be confused with the Communities, launched a few months ago, again in a trial version, by the social network. The latter represent small forums, often thematic, to which people can join to read and post about it. Circle, on the other hand, is more of a way to optimize sharing on the microblog, even if it is not clear how this can bring benefits to the platform, restricting the intended audience rather than expanding it. Although with Circle you can limit the audience of your posts, nothing prevents those who have been included in a list from taking a screenshot of the tweet to reshare it in turn. On the other hand, there are no buttons for retweeting and citing the post, just to prevent the circle functionality from losing its original meaning, allowing a wider publication by readers. Also, anyone who is placed in Circle cannot remove themselves. At the most, it has the right to silence notifications relating to the single post, in order not to receive sounds and alerts when new comments are added.
