UK: PlayStation 5 hits one million sales and breaks record

By reaching the million sales in UK, the PlayStation 5 has just established itself as the Sony console that has reached this bar the fastest in Boris Johnson’s country.

It took 39 weeks for the PlayStation 5 to be adopted in the UK to the tune of one million units. GamesIndustry.biz, based on data provided by the GfK group, reports that the console reached this milestone last August on British territory.

In doing so, the PlayStation 5 broke a first record, that of its predecessor. The PlayStation 4 had thus recorded its million sales in the United Kingdom in 42 weeks. A similar observation was recently made for Japan. Sony’s latest addition is now the console of the manufacturer who has reached the million mark across the Channel the fastest.

United Kingdom: until July, the PS4 remained ahead of the PS5

Until last July, it seemed to be selling more PlayStation 4s than PlayStation 5s in the UK. But it was apparently not greater demand that turned the tide, but new PS5 stocks. In August, Nintendo’s Switch had to settle for second place in the UK, followed by Xbox Series S / X.

In terms of the physical and digital markets, we learn that last month, 43.2% of titles sold in boxes in the United Kingdom were Switch games, and 21% of all boxed titles sold were games published by Nintendo.

The situation is, however, more opaque with regard to the sales of downloadable games. Nintendo does not actually communicate on its figures, hence the impossibility of drawing a clear picture of the situation. However, we know that the PlayStation 4 posted a market share of 36.4%, with Ubisoft having established itself as the most successful publisher in the digital sector with a market share of 19.4%.

On July 28, we learned that the PlayStation 5 had exceeded ten million sales worldwide, and here too, the PlayStation 4 had been robbed of the title of console having been imposed the most quickly. Still, with real exclusives slow to form the fingers of one hand, the PS5 still has things to prove.
