Digital stores, 1.5 million ‘abandoned’ apps and games

(ANSA) – MILAN, MAY 12 – The number of apps, including software of various types and games, which have not been updated for at least two years on the main digital stores, App Store and Play Store, amounts to over 1.5 million. The estimate comes from Pixalate, a mobile market analysis company, according to which, at the end of the first quarter of 2022, the apps abandoned in the two stores are about 30% of all those existing in their respective stores, between 4 and 5 million. At the end of 2021, the updated applications amounted to 1.3 million, less than those no longer in use. But it gets even worse: the analysis highlights the existence of over 314,000 apps that have not received new updates for over 5 years, distributed almost equally between the two stores: 58% (184,000) in the Apple App Store and 42% on the Google Play Store (130,000). Those that have not received updates for more than four years are about 500,000.

The consequences of such a scenario are, for Pixalate, understandable: “An obsolete app is a source of potential security risks for users who continue to use it” writes the agency. “The good news is that the most downloaded applications seem to regularly receive new updates. 88% of those with over one million downloads were updated from the beginning of October 2021 to the end of March 2022”. The study also provides some data on the regularly updated app categories: Finance, Health and Shopping. Games and educational apps are more easily abandoned: 38% of these have not received updates in the last two years; not a very encouraging prospect as it is mainly used by younger users and exposed to risks.
