Google: big changes to search soon

Google yesterday held its Search On event, an event during which the firm focused on all the news planned for research. The opportunity to come back to MUM, its new algorithm, but also to unveil concrete improvements that will be gradually deployed on the engine.

MUM is not really new. Well, yes, but not in the strict sense of the term. Google has indeed evoked this new algorithm during the last edition of Google I / O.

However, at the time, the giant had mostly stuck to theory. Search On was therefore the occasion for him to give a little more details.

Tips to refine the search

MUM will be able to better understand the meaning of your requests. In the SERPs, the algorithm will therefore be able to suggest more relevant queries to you.

Concretely, therefore, you will see a new banner titled, in English “Refine this search”. It will include a selection of several buttons referring to related queries advised by MUM.

A simple tap or a simple click on the button associated with the query of your choice will suffice to launch the search. But that’s not all.

In some cases, Google will be able to bring up guides extracted from web pages. The example given is that of painting. If you launch a search on this term, then MUM will bring up a banner made up of several recommended categories: painting styles, painters and so on.

The presentation of results may also vary. If you are looking for the name of a photographer, for example, then the images of pages appearing in the SERPs will be much larger. It will be the same for all slightly visual requests.

Better for Google Lens

Google Lens can come in handy in some contexts and this will be even more true with MUM.

Thanks to this algorithm, it will indeed be possible to take a photo and ask a question to obtain an immediate answer. If you photograph the Eiffel Tower and ask for its height (without citing it), then Google can show you the answer in an instant.

And it will work with everything. Google has given as an example that of a broken derailleur. Rather than getting lost in a long request, the Internet user will only have to photograph it and ask the question “how to repair” from Lens so that MUM automatically understands that it is looking for information to repair a derailleur.

Google Lens will also be integrated into Chrome, including on the desktop versions, to allow us to do visual searches from our computer.

Google Shopping is getting closer to us

Google Shopping will also evolve and take our location into account. Thanks to this change, it will be possible to know if a product that we are looking for is in stock in stores near us.

In the United States, it will even be possible to find a revamped result page for all searches relating to products. With clearer visuals and information related to the configuration of these, for example.

And it’s not over

The new Google Maps layer

In addition to all the news relating to MUM, Google has also announced two or three other things.

Google Maps, for example, will now be able to count on a new view dedicated to forest fires. A view that will allow you to follow the progress of a fire, but also to access emergency telephone numbers.

Likewise, data on city vegetation will expand to more cities. And especially in Paris.
