Twitter: new rules penalize fake posts during a crisis

Ukraine, Scholz:

Twitter will hide posts sharing false information during a crisis. The social network announced the move designed to tackle disinformation during wars, pandemics and other critical situations, in which it is very easy for the virality linked to fake news to take hold on the platform. The will, according to an official statement, is to establish new rules with which to block the promotion of certain tweets if they are seen as spreading disinformation.

Tweets classified as “fake” will not be deleted or censored. Next to them you will see a notice inviting users to click before the post is displayed, thus treating it as existing labels for explicit images. The tweets of this kind will be seen with a lower quality by the algorithm of the social network that organizes the contents, so that they are not shown several times, to more people, even if they have had some success.

“During times of crisis, determining whether something is true or false can be very difficult. To determine whether claims are misleading, we require verification from multiple credible and publicly available sources, including conflict monitoring groups, humanitarian organizations, investigators open source, reporters and more, “Twitter explains. “From now on, we will consider hoaxes events such as false breaking news about events that never happened, information that incorrectly characterizes the conditions on the ground during the evolution of a conflict, false accusations about the use of force, raids on territorial sovereignty, misleading posts on war crimes or mass atrocities against specific populations, fake concerning the response of the international community, sanctions, defensive actions or humanitarian operations “.
