Dolby Vision is now available on Xbox Series X | S

This was one of the promises of the launch of the next generation console last year: the Dolby Vision, derived from HDR technology improving the quality of images on the screen, finally arrives on Xbox Series X | S consoles after several months of waiting.

It is in a post on the official blog of the brand that Microsoft announces the news, with a dozen titles already compatible.

About ten first, a hundred later

About ten titles were announced as being already compatible with Dolby Vision: Borderlands 3, Call of Duty: Black Ops Cold War, DIRT 5, F1 2021, Gears 5, Immortals Fenyx Rising,  Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy, Metro Exodus, Microsoft Flight Simulator and finally Psychonauts 2. Microsoft assures that “more than 100 titles”Optimized for Xbox Series X | S consoles will be made Dolby Vision compatible, including Halo Infinite scheduled for next November.

The arrival of Dolby Vision will also benefit older generation titles that are not optimized for Xbox Series X | S consoles by improving the picture quality of games in HDR10 or Auto-HDR already existing as specified in the post of Microsoft’s official blog. The new-gen consoles “will automatically improve” from “thousands of games”Using other HDR standards on televisions with Dolby Vision.

It goes without saying, you must have a TV compatible with Dolby Vision technology to be able to take advantage of this new functionality. Dolby Vision is also compatible with other display technologies available on Xbox Series consoles such as Auto Low-latency Mode, or ALLM for close friends and Variable Refresh Rate.

Compatibility issue

Note, however, that some televisions, although they have features mentioned above, cannot take advantage of Dolby Vision and the 120hz display at the same time. Microsoft recalled the procedure to follow to inquire about possible compatibility problems on the televisions used:

To verify that your display is Dolby Vision compatible, press the Xbox button to open the Guide. Then go to Settings → General → Display and TV options → About your 4K display.

The Xbox Series thus become the first new generation consoles compatible with Dolby Atmos and Dolby Vision. Should we expect to see these technologies reach the competition? Nothing is less certain: if Microsoft has denied having signed any exclusivity agreement with Dolby, no announcement has been made on Sony’s side to indicate a possible future compatibility for PlayStation consoles.
