(ANSA) – ROME, MAY 23 – The Conti group of cybercriminals, which has sided with Russia since the conflict began, is changing tactics like an army and is parceling itself out to create sub-divisions. It is the thesis of the researchers of the AdvIntel company, according to which the gang specializing in ransomware is dismantling its infrastructure even if it has kept its public site alive. According to AdvIntel, Conti has been working in recent weeks to create subgroups and operate more discreetly after his statement of support for Russia attracted media and police attention and also caused internal ideological fractures.
The latest attack by the Conti group is the ransomware attack aimed at Costa Rica which has hit about thirty institutions, blocking their activities. For AdvIntel, it was a distracting strategy as the internal restructuring took place.
Meanwhile, cybersecurity firm Fortinet reports a variant of the Chaos ransomware that appears to have taken a pro-Russia turn. The attackers who use this malware, in fact, have no intention of providing a key to decrypt the data and documents thus making the ransomware, as the researchers write, “a file shredder”. Furthermore, the note left to the victims of the virus contains criticism of Ukrainian President Zelensky. (HANDLE).
