Meta, formerly Facebook, has launched a new “calls” tab globally in its Messenger app for iOS and Android. The section will keep track of every call made or received in the app and will make it easier for you to use the client to get in touch with your friends, almost like on WhatsApp. Meta’s idea is in fact to push people to use Messenger more to make phone calls, beyond the text chat functionality.
According to the group, in the last two years, also thanks to the pandemic, both audio and video calls on Messenger have increased by 40%, with 300 million calls made every day. The app first introduced voice calling in 2013 and, with today’s dedicated card, takes it one step further as a complete communications hub.
In 2014, Facebook had separated the app from the main social, publishing an independent version on both the iOS App Store and the Google Play Store. A year later the video calling feature debuted, followed by group chats. More recently, Meta added new shortcuts, including options to alert everyone in a conversation or send messages that don’t trigger notifications. In the free messaging app sector, Messenger has a long list of competitors, including Google Voice, Viber, Signal and WhatsApp itself, which Meta bought in 2014. Among many, Messenger remains one of the few, besides FaceTime of Apple, not to require a phone number when registering to work.
