(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 06 – Google dedicates the doodle to Angelo Moriondo, the man who patented the first espresso coffee machine, on the occasion of his 171st birthday. Moriondo was born on 6 June 1851 in Turin to a family of entrepreneurs, his grandfather founded a liqueur production company that was passed down to his son (Angelo’s father), who then built the famous chocolate company together with his brother and cousin. “Moriondo and Gariglio”.

Following in the footsteps of his family, Angelo Moriondo bought two premises: the Grand-Hotel Ligure in the central Piazza Carlo Felice and the American Bar in the Galleria Nazionale in Via Roma. Despite the coffee’s popularity, he had noticed that the time spent waiting for the coffee to brew bothered customers. Moriondo thought that preparing more cups in unison would allow him to serve more customers, giving him an advantage over his competitors. After directly supervising a mechanic commissioned by him to build his invention, Moriondo presented his espresso machine at the Turin General Exposition of 1884, where it was awarded the bronze medal. The machine consisted of a large boiler that pushed the heated water through a bed of coffee grounds, with a second boiler that produced steam that flashed the coffee bed and completed the brewing.

He received the patent entitled “New steam machines for the economical and instant packaging of coffee-based beverages, ‘A. Moriondo’ method”. Moriondo continued to perfect and patent his invention in the following years.

“For me it was an honor to create the graphics for an invention so loved in the world”, explains Olivia When the graphic designer who drew the doodle in the colors of coffee and dipping the brushes in the popular drink. (HANDLE).
