Have you ever visited the Central Hudson area in the New York State area? This region is home to many natural wonders but one of them deserves special mention. It is ” Panther Mountain ”, A mountain located in the town of Shandaken, in Ulster County, New York.

For those who love to climb mountains, Panther Mountain is not only interesting because of its high altitude, but also because of its intriguing history.

The 18th tallest mountain in the Hudson region

Indeed, Panther Mountain is one of the highest peaks in the Catskill Mountains. This name designates a mountain range in the state of New York. At an altitude of over 1,100 meters, Panther Mountain is the eighteenth tallest mountain in the region.

But that’s not the most interesting feature of Panther Mountain. It is surrounded by the Esopus and Woodland streams so that when viewed from above this mountain appears to form an almost perfect circle. But, according to geologists, this circle is the result of a violent impact with a meteorite.

The discovery of traces of iron would be the clear proof of the impact of a meteorite

While researching the area, scientists found that Panther Mountain had low gravitational pull compared to other mountains in the area. Apparently, this slightly lower gravity recorded by the gravimeter is due to the lower density of the rock at its center, reports 101.5 WPDH. Thus, the rock would probably have been created from the landslides of the outer rim of the crater.

More interestingly, microscopic iron spherules – that is, small spheres or small iron droplets – were discovered in rock samples from an old gas mining project on the mountain in the 1940s. Some researchers believe that the presence of these elements attests to the impact of a meteorite on this mountain.

In any case, for hikers, Panther Mountain is worth a visit if you are passing through Ulster County. Especially since the mountain is easily accessible from the trail on Route 47.
