(ANSA) – ROME, JUN 09 – Meta-Facebook abandons plans for the development of a smartwatch with two cameras, it was supposed to be the rival of the Apple Watch. Bloomberg reports, according to which the device codenamed ‘Milano’ was planned for release in the spring of 2023 at a price of over three hundred dollars. According to the newspaper, the technical problems as well as the general cut in Meta’s costs led to the cancellation of the device.

Most smartwatches, including the Apple Watch, currently don’t have any cameras, so Meta hoped the presence of as many as two cameras could be disruptive in a market where competition has flared up. The first camera would have been on the front to be used with video calls, the second placed under the device used to take photos and capture videos.

Although development of the watch has been canceled, Bloomberg reports that Meta is still working on several other wrist devices. It’s part of Meta’s CEO Mark Zuckerberg plan to offer more proprietary consumer hardware and reduce its reliance on users who have to go through Apple and Google to use its services.

Furthermore, the wrist devices in combination with the viewers can be used for augmented and virtual reality, key to the metaverse. Finally, Meta is also testing wearable devices to collect nerve signals and use them as digital inputs with a technique known as electromyography.
