(ANSA) – MILAN, 22 JUN – Twitter is preparing to launch a new feature called ‘Notes’, which would give way to the possibility of publishing longer content on the platform, going beyond the current limit of 280 characters.

As Techcrunch explains, with Twitter Notes users will be able to create articles using advanced formatting with the opportunity to attach photos and videos to the post, which others can share and save. A sort of articles posted directly on the platform without going through third-party services. The feature is being phased in with select users in the US ahead of a public rollout which, sources say, shouldn’t be far off. Twitter Notes could potentially change the way some people use social media which, in this case, would give apps like Medium a hard time, born just as aggregators of articles and insights. In fact, Twitter Notes is nothing new, at least according to what developer Jane Manchun Wong discovered earlier this year. Initially, the feature was internally called “Twitter Article” and offered formatting tools in a bar at the top of the screen, with options for bold, italic or strikethrough text, ordered lists, links, styles and multimedia attachments. Wong noted that there was also a “Focus Mode” that expanded the article into a full-screen view and hid the Twitter sidebars. In a series of images shared by app researcher Nima Owji last April, the feature was shown to support saving articles and an interface for accessing both drafts and published content.
